The Kind Lie

This hurts to say

so I'll say it low

in case my voice decides

it doesn't want to know

I practiced it straight

in the mirror this morning

but my reflection smiled

like it knew I was performing

I said “ we’re not right for each other”

like it was a fact

but right now I'm not sure

if I'm leaving or being sent back

I don't think we're right anymore

but I don't know what “ right” is for

I'm grateful for the time — I am

but grateful doesn't fix a slammed door

I think it's time to move on

except I don't know where “ on” is

maybe nowhere is where I'm headed

and that's the honest lie I'm fed with

that's what makes this hard

we just woke up one Tuesday

and the spark had sent its resignation card

No fight, no fire, no final scene

just two people being quietly mean

by being too nice to say what we mean
